North Sumatra

North Sumatra is an amazing destination. The spectacular Lake Toba with Samosir Island in the middle, Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL) with its extraordinary biodiversity. The dramatic Sipiso-piso waterfall. Volcanic mountain climbing like Mount Sibayak and the unique story of the Malay Sultanate at Maimoon Palace in Medan. The uniqueness of its tribes, culture, and nature make this province a treasure trove for nature lovers, adventurers, researchers, and survivors.

Lake Toba, with an area of 1,130 to 1,145 square kilometers (km²), is the largest lake in Indonesia. Formed by the eruption of the Toba supervolcano thousands of years ago, it is recorded as the largest volcanic lake in the world and recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The lake is also unique for having an island in its center, Samosir Island, which is very large, almost the size of Singapore. The island is home to the enduring Batak Toba culture, including traditional houses, Ulos cloth, dances, and rituals.
